DMX Digital Media have released the first ever spoken Geordie dictionary; ‘Alreet’. This dictionary is part of the ‘Alreet Geordie School’ app, which helps individuals with everything from understanding the dialect to locating the best restaurants to finding accommodation in the area.
‘Alreet Geordie School’ is the creation of Guilherme Afonso. When he moved to Newcastle he struggled to understand the accent and found that there was little aid on offer. The books available failed to provide enough help in the form of pronunciation and phonetics. He realised that he was not alone in this struggle as many tourists and newcomers to the area expressed the same problem. From the use of words such as ‘pet’ and ‘why aye’ to the confusion between lunch, tea and dinner (dinner is lunch in Newcastle and tea is dinner) – individuals remarked that coming to terms with Geordie was a lot more difficult than anticipated. Thus, this app was born; making it much easier for those moving to Newcastle or those simply visiting for the day to communicate with the locals.
The main component of the app is the spoken Geordie dictionary. Here individuals will find approximately 200 Geordie words, coupled with the definition, the use of the word in a saying, and a spoken phrase for each word. This means that people can listen to the word and the given phrase over and over again so that they can grasp what it means and how it is correctly pronounced.
The app allows people to learn all they need to know about Newcastle. Aside from the dialect, individuals will also benefit from information regarding culture, media, sports and the friendly locals themselves. ‘Alreet Geordie School’ offers a variation of ‘Top 5’ selections. These are extremely beneficial for those who are new to the area because it helps them to locate the best places in Newcastle. The ‘Top 5’ selections on offer include; nightclubs, pubs, restaurants, museums, art galleries and places in the Pink Triangle (Newcastle’s gay area). Each venue comes with a call option, a website link, and a map button – making it easier for people to contact and find the place they wish to visit.
The app has proven to be extremely beneficial to international students. ‘Alreet Geordie School’ provides information on the best places to live, as well as offering the top ten tips for those moving to Newcastle. The app can put you in contact with a top letting agency so that you can instantly begin your search for accommodation. Moreover, once an individual is settled into their new home they can use the app to find the top five takeaways on Tyneside.
‘Alreet Geordie School’ is available for £0.69 on the Apple iTunes store. It took three months to develop, but is constantly being updated. The ‘call a cab’ option and the ‘top five takeaway places’ are the latest additions to the app. Alreet Geordie School is the first spoken Geordie dictionary
Finally, the following individuals are credited with the development of the project; Guilherme Afonso is the project manager and is responsible for the programming and audio editing, Peter Robson produced the words and their definitions as well as the recorded voices, Jorge McLeman is the app’s graphic designer, Kerry Harrison produced the content about Newcastle and Geordies, and Steven Hunt is responsible for the database programming and debugging.
